When you die, your job will be posted the next day.
I wish that was a joke…but I’ve literally seen it happen (multiple times).
Let me be vulnerable and give you a preview into my brain on a Tuesday morning…. brace yourself for stream of consciousness…
Today, I was desperately trying to get 2yo dressed and packed to get out the door so I could get my workday started. My husband is traveling for work…so I’m solo parenting for the week (yay!) IYKYK
As if by some divine Apple music AI intervention, this song pops up in the car as I’m driving…(π΅ “I’m in a Hurry (and don’t know why) – hashtag#Alabama“)
…And now I’m contemplating all my life choices – naturally.
There is so much noise right now about various companies and hashtag#RTO.
Historically, I’ve been really public about my opinions on RTO as a whole, and my suspicions about the WHY for many companies.
But today – This song got me thinking all the things on a philosophical level…
π The flexibility I have to adapt to a crazy week when needed because I work primarily remotely is crucial for my sanity (and even now, I still feel self-inflicted professional pressure and probably need to slow down). I was imagining a previous life where I would have to be in the office by 8am (not 8:30am because…optics)….and I tried to imagine how I would be adapting to that with my life now – as a mother – as a daughter with aging parents, etc. etc….bottom line is that I’d be STRESSED OUT …likely to capacity. Not helpful for my work, or my health.
π People love remote work because it provides more control over their own lives …..and companies like in-office work because it provides more control over the work.
π So as a society – what do we feel is more important? Self-control, or corporate control?
π How do we solve for the debate?? What is the right balance? Is “hybrid” the only logical compromise? That feels too …basic?
π We don’t owe our companies our lives (i.e. our sanity, our health, our freedom). That’s the truth – if we die tomorrow – they’ll replace us without missing a beat. But any job worth doing, IS worth doing right, so be a good human and don’t take advantage of flexibility. Do your best work always – give results – or leave.
π Employers – we HAVE to do better. We have to learn how to manage results because NOTHING else matters.
